In this example, we will use “Improve development process quality” as our objective. An engineering department might want to use a key result like this if their production is inefficient, and they’re seeking to have a faster response time to problems and a faster recovery time from them.

The key results we’ll use to measure this objective are:

  • Ensure no more than three bugs are found or reported in production per week
  • Decrease the mean recovery time from 48 to 24 hours
  • Decrease Mean Time to Detection from 6 to 2 hrs

We’ll input the first key result- “Ensure no more than three bugs are found or reported in production per week”- then, select the end of the quarter as our target date. Because this key result wants to maintain a certain number, we will select “Control KPI” from the key result type drop down menu.

Our KPI is the number of bugs identified in production. Search for this KPI in the search box here, or select the magnifying to navigate to the Engineering category. Once you select your KPI, adjust it to your specifications– in this case, we will say “at most, 3”. You can assign this key result to another member of your team if you wish, or disregard this section. Select the frequency with which you would like to complete check-ins on this key result, and then press create.

Now, you have a key result that will directly impact your objective, and is easily trackable with check-ins. Here are the other examples of key results that would help you to improve development process quality:

These three results are all clear, ambitious, and directly impact your objective to improve development process quality.
