What is the Investment Pipeline?
The investment pipeline is the view of portfolio budget across five stages, shown in the Investment Dashboard with real-time Capex and Opex breakdowns and a fiscal year filter. Each stage answers a different question about where the money currently sits.
| Stage | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Total Budget | The full budget envelope for the portfolio in the selected fiscal year. |
| Budgeted | The portion of the total that has been allocated to work. |
| Funded | The approved budget that has been released for spending. |
| Spent | The money actually spent to date. |
| Remaining | The amount still available to deploy. |
Why Does the Investment Pipeline Matter?
A single budget total tells you the ceiling but not where the money stands. The pipeline shows how much of the envelope is allocated versus still unassigned, so if the total is large but only a small share is budgeted, you know exactly how much capacity is still free.
It also separates committed from consumed. Funded shows what has been released, and Spent shows what has actually gone out, so you can tell approved budget apart from real cash burn, split by Capex and Opex.
How Do I View the Investment Pipeline?
Prerequisite
The Investment Dashboard and its pipeline view are part of the Value Realization Office, which must be enabled for your organization first.
Step 1: Open the Investment Dashboard
- Navigate to Portfolios and Projects → Portfolios → Value Realization Office → Benefits Tracker.
- Open the Investment Dashboard for your portfolio.
Step 2: Filter by Fiscal Year
- Select the fiscal year you want to review.
- The pipeline updates to show that year's figures.
Step 3: Read the Five Stages
- Read Total Budget, Budgeted, Funded, Spent, and Remaining in sequence.
- Check the Capex and Opex breakdown and progress bar on each stage.
What Happens When Budget Moves Through the Pipeline?
| Scenario | What Happens |
|---|---|
| You filter the Investment Dashboard by fiscal year. | Profit.co shows the pipeline stages and Capex and Opex breakdowns for that year. |
| You approve a budget request for a portfolio. | Profit.co reflects the allocated amount in the Budgeted stage. |
| You approve a funding request. | Profit.co reflects the released amount in the Funded stage, ready for spending. |
| You log spend against funded work. | Profit.co reflects it in the Spent stage and reduces Remaining. |
What Are the Best Practices for the Investment Pipeline?
- Filter by fiscal year before reading the pipeline, so allocated, funded, and spent figures reflect the year you are planning.
- Watch the gap between Total Budget and Budgeted to see how much of the envelope is still unallocated.
- Read Capex and Opex separately at each stage, since the pipeline breaks both out and they are governed differently.
- Compare Funded against Spent to see how much released budget is actually being consumed, not just approved.
- Treat Remaining as available-to-deploy capacity when weighing new budget requests.
